Dictionary Map Art

I'm knee deep in redoing my boys' room.  This project has taken forever!!  I started in November with new beds, then made headboards last month.  It's not like me to let things take this long.  I'm normally a stay up all night to finish kinda girl.  But with needing my boys to actually sleep in their room I've had to work on it here and there.  Earlier this week I painted the room.  And I remember why it took my so long to do it - 2 words: vaulted ceilings. UGH!  I should have lost 20 lbs climbing up and down the ladder so much.  Maybe I would have if I hadn't fortified myself with skittles and girl scout cookies.

Anyway-   I am s-l-o-w-l-y getting the room put back together and getting some art on the walls- starting with dictionary map art.

My boys were born in 2 different states so I thought this would be an artsy fartsy way to display and pay homage to that.

My son Mason was born in Utah so I used a page from the "M" section in an old dictionary.  I drew the shape of Utah on some red cardstock and cut it out.  Then I punched a heart from dictionary paper and put it on the part of the state he was born.

I did the same thing for my son Kannon who was born in Tennessee.

I put the "art" in frames from Target.

This is the first of many projects I'm working on for my boys' room.  Hopefully I get done before they go to college! :)

Ribbon Hairband

My daughter wears a band in her hair most days.

She has a huge collection, but sometimes she doesn't have a particular color, so that's when we make our own.

The only supplies needed are ribbon in any color (I like to run a lighter over the edge of the ribbon to singe the ends and melt the plastic a bit so it doesn't unravel) and elastic.

It's as simple as forward and back stitching a few times on each side of the elastic.

Super simple!

So just grab some ribbon from your stash and you can have a hairband in just about any color you could want.  Plus if you have a giganto sized melon (like me) and can never find hair bands to fit - now you can make your own!!

Valentine's Place card holders

Since my husband and I have children, we usually spend Valentine's Day at home having dinner as a family.  So I thought it would be fun to decorate the table and make the evening a little bit more fancy.

Since we rarely use our china and linens (aka ceramic plates and cloth napkins) I pulled those out.

I also made place cards for each table setting.

I started with these cute binder clips I found at Target.  I liked the polka dot and stripes, but decided to add some glittery washi tape (from Michaels).  I also tied some bakers twine and ric rac onto the clips.

Here are the steps I used to create the name card:
-cut a 2 1/2" square of dictionary paper
-mount the dictionary paper square onto a 2 3/4" square of red heart pattered paper
-cut a scalloped heart from black contact paper or chalkboard vinyl
-write guests names with a chalk marker

Pretty simple but super cute- if I do say so myself!  :)

I purchased some red tulips and stuck them into a wide mouth mason jar for the centerpiece.  They are sooo pretty and add a hint of spring!  The red chevron table matt is sewn by me, with a lazy susan from IKEA and a large Valentine's plate placed on top.

The entire table all together!  Now all we need is some yummy food!!

Home Tour

We moved into our home about 16 years ago.  It was a basic, boring, beige, builders model home (ug).  It had lots of potential though.  Over time and and a lot of trial and error, I am figuring out our style. Ok, I say our style, but mostly it's my style.  I don't think my husband cares as long as he has a comfy bed to sleep in and his office.

I'm constantly working on a project in our home to fit our lives, personality and make them reflect us!
