striped T-shirt update

I'm not much of a fashionista, but I do try to look my best.  I love to buy trendy little tops or earrings to update my look a bit.  This time, rather than go out to buy something, I looked through my closet and found a shirt that I never wore because it was boring.   One of the best ways I like to update any room in my house is paint, so I gave that same theory a shot with a shirt.

I added a gold glitter heart!!

This is how the shirt started.  It's kinda plain and was a smidge see through, so I rarely wore it.

I hand cut a heart shape from freezer paper.  Then I ironed it to the shirt.  I also ironed a piece a little larger than the heart on the inside in back of the heart to catch any bleed through paint.

I just wanted to use what I had on hand so I mixed regular acrylic paint with textile medium.  I wish I had used fabric paint though because after all of the coats I did on the shirt, it was quite stiff.  But after a few more washing's, I'm sure it will loosen up.

Here is the shirt.  The heart added a little somethin' something and gave the shirt new life!

And here is a photo of me wearing the shirt.

So if you have a shirt in your closet that you aren't wearing, look to see if you could update it with a little paint.  The possibilities are endless.

Insta Friday 9-20

Life in our family is a whirlwind right now!!!

Last Friday we got up in the middle of the night for a 6am flight to Utah.  What in the world was I thinking booking that early of a flight??

 photo airplaneselfies_zps2e561c48.jpg

My kids were really good on theplane.  It doesn't hurt that Southwest has free tv.  We watched some HGTV and Food Network.

The reason we went to Utah was for my mom's wedding.  It all turned out really nice!  I got to visit with tons of family that I haven't seen in ages.  It was fantastic to see my mom so happy too.  That Larry is a lucky guy!!

We spent a little time with some of my fave people- my brother and his family.  They live in Arizona so we don't get to see them much.  Our kids always hit it off and we enjoyed every second together.

We also had to the chance to see our friend Marco.  He's the missionary who baptized Chris.  We got to hang out with him for a bit and meet his wife.  So fun!!

I feel so lucky that our trip to Utah coincided with my sweet friend Melissa's awesome boutique, the Hive.  She hosts at her amazing house.  Seriously I could have spent days just walking around looking at everything in her house.  Add to that the amazing goods she and her vendors were selling and I was in heaven!  It was so much fun and so inspiring.  I haven't had a chance to even unpack my treasures from the Hive but I'll show you when I do.

This is what awaited me when we got home- tons and tons of laundry. I had to get it all done and pack up again so we can go to another wedding this weekend.  Crazy!

Insta Friday 9-13

I liked this last week, so I decided to do it again.  I think it's fun learning about those whose blogs I read and thought you might like to learn a little more about me too!

Here is a peek at how me and my family lived our last week:

With my 3 kids in 2 different schools I spend a LOT of time sitting in the car waiting in the car pool lane.  Usually I don't mind as it gives me a chance to check out Instagram or Pinterest.

Last weekend I captured this image and my family was walking into a restaurant for dinner.  I especially love our little dude holding in to his daddy's hand!

We hit up our fave local mexican food place for the best queso, chips and salsa this week.  YUM!!

This kid gets home from school, rushes through his homework and chores to spend every free second he can playing Minecraft.

I'm in a wedding this weekend so I had to go get my toes all spiffied up.

September 11 is still such a solemn day.  I'll never forget!  I was at home with my 7 month old son.  I received a phone call from my mother in law telling me to turn on the tv to see the tragedies that were unfolding.  My husband was away on business.  When the airports were all closed he was stuck and ended up driving all night to get home.  I will always get teary remembering the tragedy, the heroism and the unity of our country from those events.

Did you see all of the fun projects in our blog hop this week?  Check them out- they are awesome!!

Young Women hand outs

I made a few more handouts for Young Women!

If there is one goal I have as the YW President, it is for my girls to know that they ARE daughters of God.  He knows them and loves them!

I made these handouts to help them remember that!!

As always, right click on the image you would like and save it to your computer.  Then you can print it onto cardstock on your home printer, or send it to a photo developer- like Walmart to have them printed.  If you have any questions at all in how to do this, please let me know.  No question is dumb and I'd be happy to answer any that I can!

Black and White Chevron tray

My bloggy friends and I have an awesome theme for you this month:

Black and White

Here is my project

A black and white chevron tray for my kitchen table.

Here is how it started.  Lovely eh?

I picked up this hot little number at Goodwill for $1.99.

I gave the tray a few coats with my favorite spray paint (amazon link)  I only painted the outside edges because I knew I was going to cover the center.

I found some chevron wrapping paper at Hobby Lobby.  Here is a link on amazon for the same paper.

I adhered the paper to the tray with mod podge and then let it dry over night.

I gave the tray about 3 coats of lacquer top coat (amazon link) to make it nice and shiny and durable for my table.

There are a few little wrinkles in the paper on my tray, but I'm ok with that.  If you aren't ok with wrinkles, make sure and smooth the paper with your fingers before the mod podge dries.

Be sure to check out my friend's links!

Insta Friday

I love my iphone!  It's always in my pocket and so handy to take every day pics.   Here are some of the latest I have taken.  Some are posted to my instagram account (follow me @ shescraftycrafty)

My daughter and I read the Mortal Instruments books, so we were super excited to see the movie!  It's so fun to share this with her!!

Every week we try to have a family meeting.  We talk about our past week and what's happening in the upcoming week.  We talk about things we need to work on and our family goals.  Family meetings are good!

After a long weekend, it was hard to get back into the swing of things on Tuesday.  I used to make 3 lunches every day.  Now 2 of my kids alternate with eating school lunch.  It's excellent to not have to make those lunches, and they are exposed to new and different foods.

Unfortunately my sweet girl inherited my rotten eye sight.  She had to go this week to get an updated prescription for contacts.

I did a little thrifting and picked up this jcrew shirt for $4.  I originally bought it for my daughter, but after washing and trying it on, I decided to keep it.  It's sooooo comfy!!!  PS Don't you love the filters on IG?  I wish my skin looked like this in real life!!

My little guy gets out of school 45 minutes before my big kids do.  So we spend lots of time chatting in the car as we wait.  His favorite things is to move up to the front seat and play with all the buttons and knobs on the radio and a/c.

My daughter's 11th birthday is this weekend and we are in full on party planning mode.  I'm not sure who is more excited about her Harry Potter party, her or me.

Sabbath Day Holy YW 2013

When I was going through the young woman's program, I loved getting handouts from my teachers.  So now that I am a leader in the YW program, I'm loving making the handouts.

Last week our lesson was on Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy.  I love this topic so I made a quick and simple handout to go along with the lesson.

Here are the printables.

All you need to do is right click on each image and save it to your computer.

To print (I used Windows)
go to the file that you have saved to your computer.
Click on the image and then right click.  A drop down menu will show and click on print.
This box will come up.
Make sure to uncheck "Fit picture to frame".  If not, it will look wonky.
I printed them in the 3.5x5 in size.  Then 4 printables will fit on each piece of paper.

After I cut out each printable, I used black puff paint to add dimension to the word Sabbath and to the dots on the Sabbath day do's page.

Dimension is a hard thing to take photos of, but you can kind of tell on the word Sabbath here.

After the puff paint was dry, I punched a small hole in each printable.

Then I tied them together with bakers twine.

I hope you can use these with your lessons!!
