How to decorate your home with the things you love

I love to collect things!  Being around my stuffs just makes me happy.
I'm sure there are many others out there like me.
But how in the world do you put those collections to use in your home?
I'll show you how I do it.

I've been collecting silver trays for quite a while.  I mostly pay $1-2 each at thrift stores.
For me, they don't have to be actual silver.  And the more patina the better.

I store my collections in 2 different places.
I have them grouped on the wall in my lower bath (above pic) and in the
doorway to my master bedroom.

I also love to decorate with is items that have meaning to my family.
This art is a vintage poster from the farm sale of my husband's grandparents.

We have been collecting movie stubs, concert tickets, hotel keys etc in this rusty vintage jar.

I love having this memory jar sitting on the shelf in our dining room to
remind us of the fun things our family has done.

Right when we moved to TN about 10 years ago, I found this large grain sifter
at an antique store for a few dollars.  I eventually found 2 smaller ones to make a collection.
Every time I look at these sifters, they remind me of moving to TN.

Another thing in this picture I have collected is the lock boxes.
My grandmother gave me one many years ago.  That's what started my collection.
Then I came across a few more in one of my thrifting adventures.
I have been picking them up here and there ever since.

Glass jars are another one of my favorite things to decorate with.
I just love the way they sparkle.
And I love filling them with various fillers, such as beans to
hold a candle on my kitchen table...

dried hydrangeas (from my own garden) and moss rocks...

and glass jars on my kitchen counter to hold sugar, flour and cookie cutters.
PS- I've put away the Christmas cookie cutters and
filled the sugar container since this photo was taken.  :)

My grandmother (I think I get my love of stuff from her) also gave me the camera
in the top right corner of this picture.  That camera started my camera collection
that I display on my craft room shelves.
I've picked these up while thrifting and at the flea market.
The one on the red suitcase is my first film SLR.

Another thing I love to decorate with is family photos.
I'm not sure why I like these feet pics so much, but I do!

We get our family pictures done every year and I love coming up with new ways to display them.

I like to keep older family photo prints on the wall in our playroom.

I especially love when the photos evoke strong memories.
This 3 frame has photos of my husband and myself when each of our babies were blessed.
What special days each of them were!
I love having the moment captured and framed to view on the walls of our home.

The last thing I'm going to show here are how I love to decorate with words.
I'm big on typography so words make me happy.
Since we live in the south, it's only appropriate we have a south sign.

I like to make signs with my favorite words and sayings to display around our home.
This sign is in my kids' bathroom.

These signs are in our playroom as well.

Do you have any collections?
Do you use them to decorate your home?
I'd love to hear your answers to these questions.

  1. I absolutely LOVE it! I love all the things you decorated with. I love the feet pictures. I can't wait until I either have a bigger house or a finished basement so I can add more flair to my home. I decorate with old books/favorite books and ancestors pictures. But I love everything you did.

  2. Love all these personal touches, especially the "South" sign! I would love for you to stop by my blog and join our Something to Talk About link party.
    Have a great day!

  3. I love all of this! Especially how you take such unique items and hang them on the walls for decor. It's really gorgeous. ~Amy

  4. I love the sifters you have on the wall! So neat! I also have a framed hand bill of an ad for the sale of items from my great- grandfather's farm in 1956!
