Heart Stuffies - almost no cost Valentine's Day Decor

If you're a fan of holiday decorating, you know how expensive it can be to buy new things all of the time.  One of my favorite things to do for new decor, is to repurpose something else.  I made Heart Stuffies for almost no cost, to decorate for Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day is one of those holidays that I always want to decorate for but don't want to spend a bunch of money.  So this year I came up with a way to get new decor, without spending anything.  I made Heart Stuffies.

How to Make Stuffed Hearts for Valentine's Day

Inexpensive Valentine's Day Decoration - stuffed hearts

Last week when I visited my mom, I noticed that she'd made some darling stuffed hearts.  I loved them so much, that I was inspired to copy them.  When I got home, I got to work!  First of all, I rescued a shirt from my donate pile, thinking it would be the perfect fabric for stuffed hearts for Valentine's Day.

I free hand drew heart shapes onto different areas of the shirt, with a marking pen, and cut them out.  I was able to use the pockets, some of the buttons, and some of the seams, to add interest to the front of the stuffed hearts.

I turned the hearts right side in and sewed a straight stitch around the edges of the heart.  I am not a seamstress at all, so if I can do it, you can do it.  Around the curves of the heart, I just went nice and slow, and gently turned the fabric as I stitched.  Sometimes I had to stop stitching and lift up the presser foot to slightly turn the fabric to keep the stitching smooth.

When I was sewing, I left about a 2 inch opening.  Then I turned the hearts, right side out, through that opening.

Then I stuffed the hearts with pollyfill.  I placed small chunks of pollyfill into the opening that I left in the heart.  I moved the stuffing around until the entire heart was evenly full.  Then using a needle and thread, I slip stitched the opening closed.  It's ok if the closing doesn't look perfect.  I think the visible stitches look charming!

Some of the hearts I sewed right sides out and left the rough edges for a rustic look.  I like all of the seams, the buttons and the pockets.  And some of the hearts turned out wonky, but I love that too!

I grabbed a few more fabrics from my stash and made stuffed hearts in others patterns.  Then I placed them all together in a metal basket.

Since I repurposed a shirt that was already destined for the thrift store, making these Heart Stuffies cost almost nothing and add a bunch of cuteness to my Valentine's Day Decor!
