Have you ever tried to style something in your home and couldn't quite get it to look just right?  That happens to me all of the time.  And usually what's missing is height.  You have probably heard that one the of the big rules of decor is to display it at different levels, well that's because it makes it more pleasing to the eye.

So how does one display things at different levels?  We know we can display things on books, or book stacks, but what other ways are there to display items at different levels?  Well, you can create height in any display by making a riser.

Cut a piece of 1" x 6" wood (scrap or purchased) to size.  My riser is about 20 inches long.  Then cut a 2" x 2" piece of wood down to around 2 inches.  Repeat 3 times making sure to cut each piece the exact same size since they are feet for the riser.

Hot glue the legs to the 4 corners of the top.  Then paint wood and feet matching.  Swipe some sandpaper along the edges of the wood to distress, if desired, and seal with top coat.

In my book stack vignette, I used a riser to stack everything on.  I made the riser the same way as the instructions above, but then stained the piece.  I love how adding the riser gives the vignette a more interesting look.  It anchors the plant and book stack.

On the shelves in my dining room, I used a white painted riser to hold plants and a candle.  On the 3rd shelf down I also used a round riser that I made for plants.

For the round risers, I used a round wooden plaque.  I hot glued ball knobs to one of the plaques and a candle stick to another.  Then I painted the pieces white, distressed them with sandpaper and top coated with poly acrylic.

I used the exact same process to make risers out of 5 x 7 wooden plaques.  These are the perfect size to hold a candle or some darling home decor, like wood houses.

I made a riser for my dining room table over a year ago and I am still using it.  I love it to display candles, to hold plants and to hold napkins, salt and pepper or a water pitcher at dinner time.
