I love the look of marquee letters, as you can tell from my post here. I've seen others make letter shelves, like the Lolly Jane girls. After moving some things around, yet again, in our playroom/game room/computer room, I had a large wall that needed some decoration. And I love typography, so I thought a letter shelf was the perfect solution.
Tutorial for making a Marquee Letter Shelf
- Buy all supplies (or use what you have in your garage) including 8ft piece of 1x3 select lumber and molding - I found 4 ft pieces in store that were not primed
- Spray paint the corner brackets and screws black
- Glue molding to one side of the wood with wood glue, hold tight with clamps and let dry. The molding creates a ledge that holds the letters onto the shelf.
- Stain wood - I like to brush it on with a sponge brush then wipe off with a clean rag. Also if you wear gloves, your hands won't get stain all over them.
- Attach corner braces to the bottom of the wood shelf with short screws
- Using a level, hang the letter shelf on the wall. I was lucky (very lucky since I didn't even try) to get the center of my shelf into stud. But if you don't have a stud, use dry wall anchors.
- I like the look of 8in acrylic letters . The best price I found was on ebay.
- Choose your message and place the letters on your shelf.
You can see how the molding creates a lip on the shelf that keeps the letters from sliding off.
I was so excited to change the message to a greeting for my son when he got home from college! I can see lots of fun sayings to come in the future!
This message is one that I could use and I'm sure everyone can use at this time and I am so happy with how this turned out. My letter loving heart just loves having a place to write messages on my wall! It was so simple to make a Marquee Letter Shelf, I wish I had done it a long time ago!
