This is yet another project that we did for Young Women camp, like Rope Rainbows and Journal Pen Holders. It was super easy and inexpensive. In fact, each keychain probably cost less than $0.10, which is pretty darn inexpensive and makes for the perfect group craft idea.
How to make DIY Floss Wrapped Keychains
Some of the reasons why this makes such a great group project is that besides being inexpensive, it's customizable. You can choose the colors of the floss, and you can wrap the floss in many different ways. I'm going to show 2 different ways to make floss wrapped keychains.
Supplies needed for making floss wrapped keychains
- cotton rope
- 2-3 colors embroidery floss
- keychain rings or
- keychain rings with chain and jump ring
- jump rings
Instructions for Making Keychain 1: Cut a 10 inch piece of rope and slide it through the jump ring. Or you can connect it to the keychain ring by closing the jump ring with pliers.
Wrap floss around rope pieces. You can do as much or as little as you'd like. At the end, tie the floss off with a knot.
Repeat the process with a second and even a third piece of floss if desired, tying them off at the end.
The floss doesn't have to be wrapped around the rope perfectly since I like the imperfect look. You can wrap it around very carefully and get the floss lined up just right if you take your time.
Unwrap the ends of the rope a little and fluff them out. You can trim them if they are too unruly.
Instructions for making Keychain #2: Wrap 2 colors of floss around a 6 inch piece of rope. Then slide it though the keychain ring.
Place ends together and wrap a third color of floss around the ends. Fluff out the ends of the rope.
