As I said in my previous post, I am in my horse era.  I don't know what the deal is but I love them.  I have been wanting some artwork but couldn't find any that I liked in the price range I wanted to spend.  So of course, I did what any crafty gal does...I made my own.

How to Create Horse Silhouette Artwork

Horse Silhouette made from scrap wood.

I found a scrap piece of wood leftover from a previous project in my garage.  I'm sure it's so annoying that I always say that, but you should see the pile of stuff I have and you would understand.  The piece of wood is about 1inch thick and about 10 inches by 10 inches.  For the previous project, I had painted it with off white paint and distressed it with stain.  So I started with a piece of reclaimed wood that is already, well, painted and distressed.

I found some horse silhouette images on etsy.  Etsy is such a great resource to not only find ready made products but also project supplies.  I purchased and downloaded the horse silhouettes, then I printed them out on regular printer paper.

Graphite paper to trace silhouette onto wood.

When I was in elementary school, we used graphite tracing paper to transfer images from one surface to another.  I decided to try to see if it would work for the handmade look I was going for in this artwork.

I placed the graphite paper face down on the piece of wood.  Then I placed the horse silhouette on top and carefully traced the horse with a pencil.

The tracing turned out really well on the piece of wood.  I wanted the artwork to look handmade so it is ok that it turned out slightly imperfect.

Painted horse on scrap wood.

I used a small detail brush and chalk paint to go around the edges of the horse.  Detail painting is not my talent at all and I do not have a steady hand.  But having the outline of the horse made it super easy.  Maybe I'll call myself an artist now.  Just kidding.  I'm still not.

Once the small details were outlined, I filled in the rest of the image with a larger brush.  I then let the paint dry.  At this point, you can distress the wood slightly with sandpaper and then seal it with matte finish top coat.  I opted not to do that in this case and just let the art as it is.

The artwork turned out exactly like I'd hoped, and it was super easy to do.  It also cost very little since the only thing I purchased is the graphite sheets.

I placed the horse artwork into a horse vignette in my living room.  I will be showing that entire thing next week.

Hopefully you saw how easy it is and inspired you to make your own Horse Silhouette Artwork.    You can display it with your DIY horse statue as well.
