Because of my various crafting adventures, I had most of the products used on hand. That always helps when trying out a new project!
Heart Moss Topiary Supply List
Even if you don't have a craft store at your house like I do, this is a fairly inexpensive project. You will need:
- styrofoam heart on a stick (I couldn't find a link to the one I used but you could use this one and a wooden dowel)
- green craft paint
- clay pot
- styrofoam ball
- green moss
- spanish moss
- heart ribbon
- hot glue gun
Instructions for Making a Topiary that is Heart Shaped
Step 1. Paint the base. The base color of your styrofoam heart will show through the moss so you need to paint it green. I brushed on a coat of regular craft paint and let it dry. I also coated the top part of the stick.
Step 2: Attach Moss. Once the paint is dry, you can start gluing on the moss by squeezing out a strip of glue and mooshing the moss onto it. Be careful not to burn yourself. Keep gluing and moosing until the entire heart is covered inside, outside, front and back.
Step 3: Trim Moss. The moss has a bit of a bed head look so if that's not what you're going for, you can trim the fly aways with a pair of scissors. This is a very messy project so be sure to protect your surface. As you can tell by the photos, my craft table is already messy so I just swept up the extra moss when I was done.
Step 4: Base to Hold Topiary. Place the Styrofoam ball into the clay pot. Secure it with a few globs of hot glue. If you don't have balls you can use any sturdy piece of Styrofoam cut down to fit inside the pot.
Poke the stick of the topiary into the styrofoam. Trim the stick if it is too long. Pull the stick back out, place a dot of glue into the hole and put the stick back in. Hold it in place until the glue hardens.
Step 5: Cover the Styrofoam. Use spanish moss to conceal the styrofoam ball. Run some hot glue along the surface of the ball and smoosh the moss around the stick. Keep gluing and smooshing until you can no longer see the white styrofoam.
Step 6: Add a bow. For a little decorative touch, tie and ribbon into a bow and glue it underneath the topiary.
I placed my topiary onto the cabinet with some of my other Valentine's decorations. It add that pretty yet fresh element that I love!
It's super easy to make a Heart Moss Topiary to add to your Valentine's Day decorations. I mean it is heart shaped but it would still look great in your decor for all of Spring!
