These adorable little creations can add charm to any space, whether you use them as part of a woodland-themed décor or simply as cute accents. Here's how to make your own stuffed fabric mushrooms.
How to Make Stuffed Fabric Mushrooms: A Fun and Creative DIY Craft
Materials Needed:
Before you get started, gather the following materials:
- Fabric: Choose a variety of fabrics that mimic the look of mushrooms, such as soft cottons, flannels, or felt. You’ll need different colors for the top and bottom of the mushroom. Some popular options are red, beige, or cream for the caps, and brown or beige for the stems. For my mushroom I chose green cotton for the top and a scrap of quilted fabric for the bottom. For the back I used scrap cream colored fabric.
- Fabric Pen: Use a water soluble fabric pen to trace the pattern onto the fabric.
- Scissors: Sharp fabric scissors will give you clean edges when cutting out your shapes.
- Needle and Thread: Pick a thread color that matches the fabric, or use contrasting thread for a more decorative look. Or you can use a sewing machine like I did.
- Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill or cotton batting works well for stuffing.
- Fabric glue: Optional, for attaching smaller pieces.
- Pins: For holding fabric pieces in place while sewing.
- Pattern Template: You can create your own pattern or download pre-made mushroom templates from the internet.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prepare the Pattern Pieces
First, you’ll need a mushroom pattern. You can use the one above (right click on the photo and save it to your computer. Then print it on your home printer.) Or you can create your own pattern. Typically, a mushroom consists of two parts: the cap and the stem. For the cap, cut out a simple circle or mushroom shape, depending on the look you want. For the stem, cut out a long oval or tube shape.
- For the cap: Cut a circle that’s about 4-5 inches in diameter (you can adjust this based on the size you want your mushrooms to be).
- For the stem: Cut a rectangle approximately 3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. You may want to add some length if you want a taller stem.
Once your pattern pieces are cut out, trace them onto your fabric and cut out the shapes.
2. Sew the Mushroom Cap and Stem Together
3. Place Fabric Mushroom onto Scrap of Fabric for the Back.
Use a scrap of fabric for the back of the mushroom. Lay the mushroom on top of the fabric but keep the back scrap the size that it is until you have finished sewing.
4. Sew and Stuff the Mushroom Stem
Now, let’s make the stem. Sew around the stem, starting at one side where the cap fabric meets the stem and go all the way around stopping once you get to the fabric on the other side. Then fold the mushroom cap down and stuff them stem until it is firm. Use a pen to stuff the polyfill until it is the firmness you desire.
5. Sew and Stuff the Mushroom Cap
Sew around the mushroom cap leaving a small opening for polyfill. Stuff the pollyfill into the hole until the mushroom is a full as you would like. Then sew the small opening closed.
5. Cut the back of the Mushroom.
Using sharp fabric scissors, trim the excess fabric from the back of the mushroom.
6. Add Details and Embellishments
If you would like, at this point you can get creative and personalize your mushroom! Add tiny fabric circles to the cap to resemble the spots that many mushrooms have. Use fabric glue or sew them into place. If you want to make the mushrooms more whimsical, consider adding a little fabric leaf or some lace around the base. You could also create smaller mushrooms for a fun grouping. You could also use embroidery floss to stitch fine details on the cap or stem for added texture and charm.
Displaying Your Stuffed Mushrooms
Once you've made your stuffed fabric mushrooms, you can display them in various ways. Here are a few ideas:
- Create a Forest Scene: Place them in a terrarium or on a shelf with other small woodland-themed items like miniature fairies, animals, or tiny houses.
- Table Centerpiece: Group a few mushrooms together to create a whimsical table centerpiece.
- Toss Pillows or Cushions: Sew smaller versions of the mushrooms onto throw pillows for an enchanting touch.
