Hello and welcome to spooky season!  This is the very best time of year- the leaves are changing, the temperature is cooling off  (except Nashville hasn't gotten the cooling off memo yet) and the most amazing holidays are coming up!

For my first project of the season, I whipped up some Ghost Family Paintings.  They’re simple to make, require just a few supplies, and add that cozy-spooky touch to your fall décor. The best part? Not a lot of artistic skill is required—just a little imagination!

When I was dreaming up this project, I looked in my frame stash and had a bunch of brass frames in various sizes, so that is what inspired this project!

Supplies Needed for Ghost Paintings

Directions for Making DIY Ghost Paintings

Cut cardstock in frame sizes.

Cut black cardstock to the size of your frames.  Mine were 4 x 6, 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 inches.  I use a paper trimmer to make cutting easier but you can use scissors as well.

Paint ghost shapes onto black paper.

To paint the ghost shapes:  use a pencil to lightly draw a ghost shape onto the paper.  Then use paint to fill it in.  It does not have to be perfect but it's good to keep brushing the paint to get out the stroke marks..  Let the paint dry.

Use acrylic paint to make diy ghost paintings.

I just used basic acrylic paint.  The kind I used was pretty thin, so once the first coat was dry, I went back in and brushed on a second coat to make the ghosts really stand out on the paper.

Paint marker for eyes on ghost.

Once the white paint is dry, draw eyeballs onto the ghost with a black paint marker.  You can also use the handle of a paint brush dipped in black paint to make circles.

For the eyeballs, I varied the sizes.  I did some oval shapes and some circle shapes.

Framed DIY ghost paintings.

Pop your painting into a frame, lean it on a mantle, or add it to your Halloween gallery wall. They also make great handmade gifts—cute and spooky all at once.
