I set a goal this year to buy no new Halloween decorations. While I almost succeeded, I did use most of the things I already had. So I'm gong to show you a step by step on How to Decorate for Halloween with stuff you already have.
As I was planning my holiday decorating this year, I set a goal to buy no new things. While that is next to impossible for someone like me (a maximalist) I did almost did it.
How to Decorate for Halloween with items you already have
The very easiest thing to do each year is to go out and buy all the new, trendy decor pieces that we see on Tik Tok or Instagram. But the many holiday totes I have in my attic demanded that I not do that this year. So I challenged myself to refrain from spending.
Step 1: Find Your Decorations this means actually looking in your attic and see what you have. This is a small sampling of the many, MANY totes of Halloween/fall decorations I have.
Step 2: Haul the totes down from the attic (in from garage or up from the basement). Or sweet talk your husband/kids into helping you. I like to work on my own time table so I usually carefully haul the totes myself. My husband is willing to help but he's always working. I put the tote on my lap and scoot down the ladder on my booty. It's not pretty but it works!
Step 3: Lay out everything you have. This is the most important thing because we always forget what we have from year to year. I pile everything on my kitchen table, make a plan for what I have and then start sprinkling spooky charm everywhere.
The Decorating
Start tucking things here and there through out your house.
I knew I wanted to do a pumpkin-palooza on this cupboard in my living room. I grabbed some spools, a wooden cubby, a wooden riser, books and a wire basket and started filling in with my extensive faux pumpkin collection. I even tucked in a few real pumpkins.
The blow mold and pumpkin pail collections on top make me so happy. Some of the pails are vintage and some are store bought from years past.
Adding pumpkins to every day items like this wire basket and the wooden items gives a lot of interest.
I set up this vignette inside my front door. I layered some old cupboard doors on top of a flea market table. Then I placed a drawered cubby on it's side and put a diy stool on top. I filled in with a wreath, a faux pumpkin and the cutest little pumpkin print I got at a local store.
I like to add my house hold plants to Holiday decorations. This pumpkin bowl looks great holding my trailing pothos.
I filled my dining room cubbies with all manner of fall decor. I also used cut a dried hydrangeas from my garden.
I think it looks so great to add faux pumpkins to my regular decor, like these milk glass vases.
I even added a few little crows and a ghostie friend to my picture shelves.
Halloween decorating doesn’t have to be expensive—sometimes, the best decorations are already in your home waiting to be reimagined. Take a look around with a spooky perspective, and you’ll be surprised how easily everyday items transform into festive Halloween décor.
