Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh...  It's December and officially time to celebrate Christmas.

Do you decorate your home in a theme for the holidays?  I use jolly old St. Nicholas in my Christmas decorating, but I also like to do snowmen that I can keep displayed through January.  This year I decided to make some rustic snowmen for winter décor.

How to Make Rustic Snowman

Supplies to make rustic snowman.

I was able to make this project with things I had in my craft room.  I used styrofoam balls, a leftover piece of wooden dowel and a leftover piece of an old spindle as a base.  If you don't have a giant stock of craft supplies, grab a few things from the craft store.   This project is very inexpensive and easy- which makes it the perfect project!

Styrofoam balls on a wooden dowel.

How to put together a Rustic Snowman

  • Drill a hole in the base either the same size as the dowel or slightly smaller.
  • Put a dab of hot glue into the drilled hole and tap the dowel into the hole with a hammer.
  • Feed Styrofoam balls onto dowel, hot gluing them in place.

Fabric draped over styrofoam balls.

  • Drape 2 layers of fabric over the Styrofoam ball forms, each piece measruing about 8" x 14".
  • Tie cotton twine in between each ball, holding the fabric in place.

Face drawn on snowman with fabric markers.

  • Use a black fabric marker to draw oval eyes onto the face of the snowman.
  • Use an orange fabric marker to draw a triangle for a carrot nose.
  • Hot glue 3 buttons on the chest of the snowman.
  • Tie a scrap of plaid fabric around the neck of the snowman.

Use detail scissors to poke holes for twig arms.

  • Using sharp scissors, poke a hole in the fabric and into the side of the middle Styrofoam ball.
  • Dab a bit of hot glue onto the ends of the twigs and shove them into the hole.

SNOW scrabble letters.

  • Make a sign for the snowman with scrabble letters.
  • Hot glue letters to scrap of paper.
  • Hot glue twine to the sign to hold it around the snowman's base

Sprinkle snowman with faux snow.

  • Place snowman onto a platter and sprinkle with faux snow.
  • Stand back and admire your handiwork.  This is a most important step.
