I swore after the last time I went to Girls Camp 3 years ago, that I wasn't going again. But guess where I was mid July? Girls Camp. I am not a fan of heat, sleeping anywhere other than my bed, bugs, sharing bathrooms, or being super busy, But I am a fan of YW aged 11-18, crafts, helping to build testimonies and friendships, having fun and making good memories. So that's how I found myself doing camp again. Not to mention the camp director is someone that I love and admire.
Anyhoo, like it years past, I elbowed my way in to doing crafts at camp again. I have done it several times in the past, like here and here, so I kinda knew what I was doing. I wanted to do crafts that were simple, budget friendly, and could be self led. Those can be some difficult qualifications, but Beaded Wind Chimes checked all of those boxes.
Beaded Wind Chimes
Our Young Women love to make crafts. And they love beads and putting their own spin on things. So offering a wide range of beads and ways to string them was a very popular idea. Beaded Wind Chimes can be hung in their bedroom window to swing in the wind.
The first step is to always gather supplies. You'll need
- wooden dowls
- fishing line
- assorted beads
- jute string
- cardstock label
- scissors
How to Make Beaded Wind Chimes
Cut fishing line into 24 inch pieces. You don't really need that much but it will give you some slack. Thread a larger bead onto the end and tie it several times. Thread the line through the bead again and tie it. After the bottom bead is secure, thread smaller beads onto the fishing line.
You can do the lines any length you'd like, I did about 10-12 inches. Once the string is about that length, tie it off so the beads don't slip off the line. Continue making beaded strings until you have as many as you would like. I made 7 in the above example.
Tie all of the beaded strings to the dowel. Space them out so they can dangle nicely and not get tangled.
An important part of group crafting is labeling the project with your name. I used a small piece of cardstock with a punched hole, to write my name and then used a few more beads on the string.
Beaded Wind Chime Instructions
To make this craft easier to do as a self led group craft, I made step by step instructions and printed them on a poster. That way, the YW could do the crafts as they had a chance during free time, even if I was busy doing something else. Which I usually was.
This Beaded Wind Chime is a super fun, yet simple and colorful craft that the YW loved.
