Think Celestial Stitchery
In October 2023 General Conference, President Nelson coined the phrase, Think Celestial. I loved his talk and have thought of it often. Think Celestial essentially means be mindful of the choices that you make right now because all of our choices have lasting effects. We want to make the very best ones to align with our goals of being a disciple of Christ and living with God forever. That advice applies to someone my age and it applies to the youth of the world.
How to Make a Think Celestial Stitchery
When it came time to come up with crafts for YW camp, I knew I wanted to include something to do with this fantastic saying. I came up with doing a stitchery because floss and paper are so inexpensive and learning a basic stitch is a skill that can be valuable (think fixing a hem on your pants or on a blanket).
First thing to do as always is gather supplies. You will need:
- Think Celestial Stitchery card printed on white cardstock
- yellow embroidery floss
- embroidery needles
- tape
- needle threader
- scissors
I created the printable on Pic Monkey. It is saved as a 4 x 6 size. You can print it larger or smaller depending on your need for the project. For YW camp, I printed them on my home printer in 3 x 5 size so I could print 4 to a page. It made printing and cutting 150 of them a little time consuming but easy enough to do.
Thread a single strand of floss onto the needle. Make sure to use a needle with a large eye so it can be threaded with embroidery floss. You don't need to tie the end off in a knot.
Start by poking a hole on the front side of the card with your needle. Then thread the needle from the back to the front, gently pulling the thread until it has gone almost all the way through leaving about an inch. Tape that inch of floss to the back of the card.
Continue stitching a straight stitch (tutorial on sewing a straight stitch here) on all of the sun rays of the printable. You can do long or short stitches. Poke holes from the front when you need to feed it from the back.
For YW Camp, these projects were self led. So I made step by step instructions for each project and printed them on a poster to hang in our craft area. The supplies were available and there were plenty of adult chaperones to help.
This Think Celestial Stitchery is a simple yet meaningful project to do at YW camp or for any midweek activity.
