My craft room is the place in my house that I spend a ton of time. It is where I create projects, sew, blog, process all of my finds for my vintage and antique booths, journal, scroll through Instagram and ultimately hang out. It's my happy place. Since the room has so many functions, it can easily get completely out of control. So I have come up with a few things to keep it running smoothly.
Top Five Craft Room Must-Haves
- Stations
- Lighting
- Power Strips mounted on the wall
- Smart Storage
- Bins for each of my booths
Craft Room Stations
Since my room serves many purposes, I made stations for each purpose.
This little corner is my sewing station. My sewing machine is plugged in underneath that black and white cover. When I need to use it, I pull it over and it's ready to go. I keep my fabric underneath the sewing station in a plastic drawer cart, using this idea for fabric storage.
Above the sewing machine is my peg wall rack- with a thread holder, ribbon held on peg hooks, scissors, vinyl tools and my paper cutters (similar here). I also have a little peg basket that holds tape, glue and other small items.
I built risers above my craft room station. Since I had some issues on this wall in my craft room, I don't dare hang anything on the wall. The risers really help to add more storage for twine holders, cans holding brushes, pens, tools and price tags. I also store my Silhouette on one of the risers. It's been a minute since I've used it but I have a project on my to do list.
My crafting station is made out of modular craft boxes and drawers. On top of the modular boxes is a vintage door as a table top. In the drawers I store tools, glue, craft supplies, paint, rubber stamps, and various stickers, paper and ephemera.
On the corner of my work station I keep a cordless glue gun (similar here) and a heat gun. The heat gun is the perfect tool for getting those stubborn thrift store stickers off. It's also great to help dry paint.
I also have a computer work station. I use a desk top computer to do all of my blogging, photo editing and printable making. I store office supplies in the drawers along with my camera equipment, and note cards.
Near my computer I store my printer. I have it sitting on a vintage wooden table. Eventually I would like to build a shelving unit for the printer and all of the paper and accessories, but for now, this is working just fine!
Craft Room Lighting
An important part of any craft room is lighting. Of course I have an over head light, but it's just not enough. I added a bunch more lighting.
Above my craft station I placed a super cute red desk lamp. I love being able to move it directly to the place I need some extra light!
I put a row of clamp lights onto the curtain rod in my craft room. I connected these together and hooked them up to a smart plug. All I have to do is tell Alexa to turn on plug one. It's awesome!
Power Strips
Since my craft room serves so many purposes, I need a ton of outlets. And that means lots of power strips. Power strips can be a little unwieldly, but hanging them on the wall makes them super easy to get out of the way!
I like to use the flat plug power strips. They are much easier to navigate other items around.
On the back of the power strip is holes for screws to be able to hang them on the wall. If you're really good at measuring, you can measure the holes and use screws according to the measurements.
But if you're like me and are measurement challenged, you can do this hack to hang a power strip on the wall. Place a piece of painters tape on the back of the power strip, then use a pen or pencil to trace the holes onto the tape.
Once you have the marks on the tape, place the tape on the wall. Use a level to make sure the power strip is level. Then using a drill or a screwdriver, place the screws into the marks on the painters tape.
Tear off the painters tape and hang the power strip on the wall on the screws. Then you can plug in all sorts of things!
Smart Storage
While I am so grateful for my craft room, it is not an endless amount of storage. So I had to make some smart storage decisions.
While these metal shelves look super messy, it is actually fairly organized. I store a variety of items in each of the bins. Grouping like items together (glassware, dishware, paper items, plants etc) helps to keep things organized.
I use S hooks to hang various items from the metal shelves. They work great to hold reusable bags, my apron and clothing I am working on for my booth.
Beside the metal shelves I store rolls of paper in a vintage mail box and my backdrops stacked up against them.
Bins for My Booths
As I have said here, I am a vendor at 2 different antique malls. Trying to keep up with all of the inventory is a chaotic job!
I keep 2 different plastic bins on the bottom of one of my storage shelves. It's handy to have them ready so that when I process my finds, I can immediately place them in the correct bins.
