How to Make Stand Up Tissue Paper Flowers

On the first day of girls camp, our theme was You Are Beautiful.  We used large flowers made from paper plates and stand up tissue paper flowers to decorate with.  Keep reading for a tutorial for how to make the stand up flowers.

An amazing friend of mine on the Camp Committee made all of the tissue paper flowers using a tutorial similar to this.  She used tissue paper and floral wire. They turned out amazing and I am so thankful that she made them!

Once I had the flowers, I had to figure out how to make them stand up.

How to Make Wooden Stands for Tissue Paper Flowers

After doing some research and looking around to see what was available, I eventually settled on making stands out of wooden dowels and 2x4's that I had leftover from another project.

Cut down 2 x 4's to make flower stands.

  • Cut the 2 x 4 down to 6-8 inches.
  • Use a 1inch paddle bit to drill a one inch hole almost all the way through the 2x4
  • Cut the dowel down to 24"
  • Sand the cut edges
  • Place the dowel into the drilled hole and pound it in with a rubber mallet until it can stand in the 2 x 4
  • You can then paint the stand if you would like.  I spray painted the ones I made with different colors of green spray paint I had on hand.

How to Attach Tissue Paper Flowers to Wooden Stands

Now that the stands were made, I had to figure out how to get the tissue paper flowers to stay on the wooden stans.

On a paper plate, I cut an X into the center of it with a utility knife.  I stuck the top of the wooden stand through the X.  The flowers had a wire tail so I used that to wrap around the dowel.  Then I dabbed a bunch of hot glue onto the plate and pushed the flower onto it.

We made a whole bouquet in different colors and styles, and they instantly brightened up the room. These flowers are great because they won’t wilt, they’re reusable, and they’re easy enough that even kids can help make them.
