One of the most fun and photo-worthy projects we did for Young Women Camp this year was making large cardboard letters that spelled out Best Camp Ever.  These oversized letters made the perfect backdrop for group photos, decorated our main gathering space, and added a big punch of personality to camp. Best of all—they were budget-friendly and easy to make with a little (or a lot ) time and effort!

These letters were definitely a labor of love.  The measured 2 feet by 3 feet so they took a pretty significant amount of time to make but made a HUGE impact in our decorating at camp for very little money.

We started by collecting large pieces of cardboard.  I was able to get a large amount of cardboard from  a friend that works in a local warehouse.  You could use any cardboard boxes from appliances or moving boxes.  You can piece them together if necessary.

Draw letters onto cardboard.

How to Create Large Cardboard Letters

  • mark 2 ft by 3 ft onto a flat piece of cardboard
  • free hand draw block-style letters.  If that isn't your jam, you can use a template or use a projector.
  • cut out the letters using a utility knife
  • reinforce any floppy sections with strips of cardboard taped to the back
  • trace the letter onto another piece of cardboard and cut it out to make the back of the letter

Use disposable cups for spacers inside cardboard letters to make them dimensional.

To make the letters dimensional, I used small cups as spacers.  I hot glued about 10-15 cups in-between the layers of cardboard.  The cups I used were easily crushed so next time I would probably use bigger/stronger cups or double them up.

Cover letters with plastic table cloths.

I covered the letters with plastic table cloths.  I found some that were iridescent and caught and put out beams of light.  They were soooo pretty!  I used clear packing tape to attach the table cloth to the cardboard.

Tips:  take your time covering the letters with the table cloth.  Gently wrap the table cloth around the letter and tape, tape, tape to hold it.

It probably took about an hour to do each letter from start to finish.  So if this is a project you are undertaking, give yourself  p l e n t y of time to get it done.  Also, consider how you will transport your letters to the venue when making these.  Luckily for us, we had a trailer and the letters were able to ride on top of all of our camp stuff.

We stacked the letters in front of the fireplace in the main building of our camp.  They were pretty light weight and held well just by taping them to the wall.  I LOVED the way they looked!!!

Other Ideas for Large Cardboard Letters

I would totally make letters like this again if I had a huge space to decorate.  They could be made for a church party, graduation or even a wedding.  How cute would they be with the couple's last name??  OMG I am totally going to talk one of my kids into these when they get married.
