I have a giant head.  No really - I do.  Nothing ever fits.  I have to buy mens ball caps because they actually fit my giant noggin.  I cannot wear headbands because I can't find one that doesn't squeeze my brain and make me have a headache.

With summer coming up, I need some quick and easy hair do's and wanted a cute headband or two.  I was faced with the decision of having hair in my face or having a headache from a headband.  That is until I figured out how to make my own custom headbands.

They seriously took about 5 minutes.  The hardest thing was narrowing down my ribbon choices!  I'm a big fan of black, white and gold so those are what I chose.

I picked up all of the supplies for less than $10 at Hobby Lobby.  If you don't have access to a craft store to buy the supplies, they can be ordered from Amazon via below links.

Supplies Needed

ribbon- buffalo check ribbon, stretchy lace ribbon, golden leaf ribbon
elastic- 1/2" black elastic, 1" black elastic
sewing machine

How to make a custom headband

Cut ribbon to the size of your head, subtracting 3-5 inches for the elastic, depending on how stretchy the ribbon is.  The lace was very stretchy so I only used about 2 inches of elastic.

Fold over edge of ribbon and pin it to one side of the elastic.  The pin just needs to hold the elastic temporarily while it is put underneath the presser foot of your sewing machine.

Sew back and forth over the elastic and ribbon several times, to make a secure hold.  Once one side is done, repeat on the other side.  Make sure to not twist the ribbon.  Not that I know that from the experience of twisting the ribbon and having to unpick it.

That's it.  It takes about 5 minutes to make a headband in the exact size of your head!  I am so excited to have headbands that actually fit my head!  Yay!

Repeat with other ribbon selections.  I didn't realize the buffalo check ribbon I used was wire edged until I cut it.  But it was simple enough to pull the wires out of the ends on the ribbon.

I found this darling gold leaf ribbon.  I thought it was going to be too delicate to make into a headband, but it worked perfectly.  And it will be much more comfortable than a metal leaf headband!

These headbands can be made to match any outfit or with any design of ribbon!
