Last week when I was doing some thrifting I found some ceramic birds. I passed them up at first because they weren't super attractive and decorative birds aren't really my jam. But on my second trip around the store, I figured they would make a fun display in my vintage wooden cubby.
As I was looking through my spring decorations, I found a few other birds in my stash to go with the vintage ones. The links above will take you to some birds online if you can't find them at the thrift store.
How to Make Book Page Paper Shred
Earlier this spring when I displayed my Cement Look Bunnies, I placed book page paper shred into the wooden cubby at the bottom to display Easter eggs and bunnies. I decided to leave the shred in there to look like nests for my birdies. I'll show you how easy it is to make Book Page Paper Shred.
Find an old book that you don't mind cutting up. (If you don't have a book, you can easily purchase one at the thrift store, or purchase book page paper.) The book I used had parts that were damaged but I was able to salvage some of the pages. I put a stack of 3-4 pages into my trimmer and cut small strips.
Once you have a pile of paper strips, crumple them up in your hands. You may have to separate the strips a little bit when they stick to one another. Keep crumpling and separating until you have a pile.
I loosened the pile a little and placed the shred into the cubbies. I also tucked small nests, mini grapevine wreaths and mini eggs into the cubbies.
How to Decorate a Vintage Wooden Cubby with Birds
This wooden cubby is a staple in my home décor. I purchased it several years ago at the Nashville Flea Market. I have also seen them occasionally at the thrift store. It was full of cobwebs and dirt when I found it. I cleaned it up and brushed on matte top coat to keep the vintage finish protected.
The cubby is the perfect place to display a bunch of small little goodies, like the bunnies and eggs displayed at Easter time and now the birds and nests.
The cubby is displayed on the bottom shelf of the white cupboard in my living room. I filled the other shelves with various things that coordinated with the cubby. I'll be sharing more about that soon.
Hopefully you are inspired to grab those birds the next time you see them at the thrift store. They are so easy to display in a Spring Cubby with Book Page Paper Shred.
