Halloween chalkboard blocks

Guys I made the easiest and cheapest Halloween decoration ever.  You may be doubting me since I do have a flair for the dramatic...  But seriously, this project, Chalkboard Blocks for Halloween, is SO easy!  You're going to be cranking these out as fast as possible.

I have challenged myself this year to not spend any money on my Halloween decor.  That decision has forced me to be really creative with the supplies I already have. I mean, I could practically open up a craft store/woodworking shop.  I definitely DO NOT need to buy anything else, and I even talked myself out of a purchase recently.  Of course that doesn't count for the fresh pumpkins and mums I have to buy every year.

As I was searching through my garage the other day, I came upon a 2 x 4 that was about 2 feet long.  It was left over from...I don't know what...but I had a strong desire to use it.  I cut it down to 4 inch pieces and brainstormed ideas.  I eventually came up with the idea to make chalkboard blocks.

The supplies for this project are:

  • 2 x 4 piece of wood, cut into 4 inch pieces
  • chalkboard paint
  • chalk

Tips for making chalkboard blocks

  • Sand the blocks really well before painting. I leave a lot of the imperfections in the wood because I like the character.  If you want a totally smooth surface, sand and sand and sand some more.
  • Wipe the saw dust from the blocks.
  • Paint several light coats of chalkboard paint onto the blocks, letting each coat dry for about an hour in between.
  • After you have the coverage you want, let the paint cure according to the instructions on the paint, usually at least a day.
  • Season the surface by rubbing a piece of chalk, all over the block.
  • Use a damp paper towel to wipe the chalk off of the block.
  • Write your message on your blocks.
  • It works best if you use a sharpened piece of chalk.  Did you know that you can put chalk in a pencil sharpener to get a pointed tip?

Add the blocks to your Halloween Home Decor.  Black and white is so neutral these go with anything!  I love the way they look with the bats I have on my wall.

Since I like character, I think the imperfect writing in chalk is charming.  If you aren't a fan, you could cut vinyl or use letter stickers for your message.

See I told you this was an easy project.  And inexpensive too, since each block probably costs around $.25. You just can't beat a project that costs a quarter. I just love me some inexpensive Halloween projects!

These chalkboard blocks are perfect to write BOO for Halloween.  You could also spell out H-A-L-L-O-W-E-E-N.  You could spell out anything for any holiday.  These blocks can be reused over and over.  My mind is just pinging all over the place with the possibilities.

Chalkboard Blocks are the perfect thing to add to your Halloween home decor!  If you make them, I'd love to see!  Tag me on IG or on FB.
