I have a bunch of wood (like A LOT) sitting in my garage that I have reclaimed from other projects. I just can not get rid of a piece of wood that's in decent condition. Because of that, I'm always looking for ways to use some of it up. As I was doing my gardening vignette, I decided to use a piece of that wood to make a Flowers For Sale sign. I liked the way it looked so much, I decided to make another one for my July 4th vignette.
How to Make an Easy Stamped Letter Sign
Find a Piece of Wood. As I said above, I used a piece of wood that was reclaimed from another project. It had lived a long life before this project so it has been stained, painted, and had various holes drilled in it. The wood is a 1" x 4" that's about 20 inches long. I didn't do anything to prepare it except wipe the dust off of it.
Use Letter Stamps. I pulled out some foam letter stamps that I have had forever. I used to use them when I was big into scrapbooking. I don't think they even make/sell them anymore, so here is a link for large wood block letter stamps.
Spell out your word of choice to get the spacing correct for your piece of wood.
Use Paint on letter stamps. Brush a light coat of paint (similar paint brand) onto the letter stamp with a sponge brush and press it onto the wood. Don't worry about perfection. This project still looks great even if the letters are stamped perfectly - in fact, I think it looks better!
Distress Sign. After the paint has dried, sand the sign with a mouse sander to distress it. You can use sandpaper or a sanding block as well, I am just a slacker and like to make things as easy as possible for myself.
Display Your New Sign. After wiping off the saw dust, it's time to hang up your sign. My favorite way to hang them is with velcro strips. But you can also use picture hanging hardware. I displayed my America sign in above my Clipboard Collage and Easy Wooden Shelf.
I took a few of these signs to my booth at a local antique mall. That's where these photos were taken. If you're local to middle TN, let me know and I'll give you the address.
