How to Add Valentine's Day into Your Home Decor

It is no secret that I am a lover of all things antique and vintage.  So my favorite way to decorate at any time of the year is to use that as a starting point and add the perfect weathered pieces for charm and style.  Today I'll be sharing my secrets for doing that!

Secret 1.  Use items you already own in the holiday color scheme.

Since this month is Valentine's Day, I pulled out a bunch of red, white and pink items I already had in my stash and incorporated them into my regular decoration.

Adding holiday décor to items you already own is a simple and sustainable way to celebrate the season without overwhelming your space or budget. On the cubbies in my dining room, I store extra dishes, plates, gravy boats, vases and cookie cutters along with my newest collection of mortar and pestles.  on top of these items, I pulled together some red polka dot bowls and tied some velvet ribbon to a jar of cookie cutters. Instead of purchasing all-new decorations, you can enhance your existing pieces with festive touches that blend seamlessly into your home’s style. This approach is an eco-friendly way to decorate, reducing excess waste and encouraging creativity as you find new ways to repurpose what you already have.

Milk Glass vases with vintage hankies.

One of the favorite projects I did this holiday was putting vintage hankies into milk glass vases.  This idea was inspired by several people sharing on IG.  I didn't have enough red hankies so I bought some at Four Sisters Antiques and Vintage, an antique mall I have a booth in.   If you can't find vintage hankies, you can use some like these that are vintage inspired.

In a vintage glass jar on my table I placed disco hearts and felt hearts.  I was going to do a little craft project and make some banner flags for the jar out of felt.  But then I found these at a local store, for less money that I could have made them.  I snatched them up, plopped them in the jar and called it good!

I have a thing for cookie cutters and love spreading them around the kitchen for the holiday.  I strung heart cookie cutters on the peg rack in my kitchen with a small felt banner that I found at the same store I found the flags above.  Once again, it was less expensive that I could have bought all the supplies for, so I snatched it up and hung it here.  Even though I'm a crafter, I am a realist too!

Secret 2.  You can always use neutral colors but don't forget to add some fun holiday craft projects.

Neutral Valentines' decor.

This spot right inside my front door is one of my favorite spots to decorate.  The green hardware cabinet is my most favorite piece in my home,  In fact, it's by my door so that in the horrible event of a fire or evacuation, I can push it outside to save it.

The heart moss topiary was a project I did this year.  Crafting your own holiday décor adds a personal, meaningful touch to your celebrations while allowing you to express your creativity. Handmade decorations make your home feel unique and tailored to your style, rather than relying on mass-produced items. It’s also a wonderful way to create lasting memories—whether you’re crafting alone for a peaceful, creative escape or making it a fun tradition with family and friends. Ultimately, homemade decorations bring warmth, sentimentality, and a special charm that store-bought décor simply can’t replicate.

I placed a wooden handled tool box on it's side to create cubbies.  In those cubbies I placed vintage clocks and floral frogs.  In the metal frog I placed a printable bingo card (similar here) and used LOVE scrabble letters on a tile holder.  This little spot with those simple touches is perfectly neutral yet has a little bit of Valentine's love thrown in.

Secret 3.  Use found items in unexpected ways.

This cupboard in my living room makes the perfect display area for collected items I have found thrifting.  Using thrifted items in unexpected ways adds charm to your home by infusing it with personality, history, and a touch of creativity. Here in this space I have used a found child's cash register, wooden corbels, a red checker pail and plaid lunch boxes.

Over the past year, I have collected heart baking pans at the thrift store when I have found them.  One would expect to bake with them, but I piled them into a wooden box and displayed them on a shelf in my living room.  It's Valentine's Day decor in an unexpected way.

Vintage and secondhand finds often have unique details, craftsmanship, or patina that new items lack, giving your space a sense of character and warmth. Repurposing these treasures in unconventional ways creates a home that feels curated and one-of-a-kind. This approach also sparks conversation, adds layers of nostalgia, and allows you to decorate sustainably while showcasing your personal style in a fresh, imaginative way.
