Why I get ready every day as part of my self care practice

As a busy mom with tons of things to do in a day, taking care of myself can be pretty low on the list.  But I have found that when I put a tiny bit of effort into myself, I feel better which makes me better able to take care of my family and my to do list.  That is why I choose to
Get ready every day as part of my self care practice.

Self Care is a buzz word/phrase right now.  But what does self care even mean, especially for a mom that barely has time to go to the bathroom?  Does it mean getting a pedicure or a massage?  Does it mean sleeping in and getting a house keeper?  It can be those things.  But how about something a little more simple that can be practiced daily?

As a work at home mom, I spend most of my days at home by myself grinding away on my computer. It would be really easy for me to stay in my jammies all day.  And there are some days that I do because I am a human after all.  But in an effort to take better care of myself, I have found that the best and easiest way to do that is to Get Ready for the Day!

I'm not advocating that we are not enough in our natural state.  Nor do I think we have to do full hair, make up and wear a stylish outfit with heels to be "ready."  What I am saying is that putting a little bit of effort into myself by taking a shower, brushing my hair and applying a bit of mascara makes me feel good.  And when I feel good, I can do good because our self image goes a long way toward our mental and physical health.

I don't always feel like getting ready.  But if I leave getting ready to only do when I feel like it, then I never will. And I end up looking like this.

This is a person who didn't feel like getting out of bed.  Or getting in the shower.  She is certainly not motivated to do anything to reach her goals or take care of anyone.  She will probably sit on the couch and watch Netflix all day.

The truth is, I will probably never feel like hopping in the shower.  And I certainly don't feel like doing my hair or make up.  But when I power through and just do it, I feel SO much better about myself.  It creates momentum and I am able to accomplish SO MUCH MORE!!

To make it easy on myself,  I broke down exactly what I needed to do to get ready and feel good about myself.  I can be basically ready in just 30 mins.  THIRTY minutes is time well spent.  Taking a quick 30 mins out of 24 hours for myself, sets me up with good thoughts about myself.  And everything starts with the way we think about ourselves.  Because when we look better, we feel better and carry ourselves better.  When I feel better about myself, I show up better in the world.  I can help meet the needs of my kids and my husband.

When we are trying to better ourselves we sometimes think we have to do something drastic like join a gym and hire a personal trainer to develop an exercise routine.  But really the best and most lasting changes occur when we change something or make a habit in our day to day lives.

When you feel better, you better!  Ask yourself what you can do to take care of yourself today.  And then make that a part of your daily routine!
