20 good habits for 2020

It's the start of a new year, time to set resolutions and make ourselves better right?  Well, rather than make a big production of making and then not keeping resolutions, what if we tried to ADD good things rather than think about all the things we can't do?  We can start with our habits.  Let's add 20 good habits for 2020!

I'm all about making resolutions.  In fact, I have already posted about 20 of my goals for 2020.  But what is it going to take me to reach those goals?  Good Habits.

So how about a list of 20 good habits for 2020!

12 steps to a successful morning routine for moms, get up before kids right when alarm goes off

wake up at the same time each day

This is a hard one for me because I love to sleep...  like LOVE!  I slept a ton during Winter Break and I loved it.  I don't think I'll ever like getting up early, but I can totally see the benefits of having a good wake up habit.  So maybe this is something we {or maybe just you :) } can work on.  

develop a morning routine

I have found that how you start your day is indicative of how your day goes.  On the days that I wake up at a decent time (see above) and do my morning routine, my day runs so much smoother!  I have developed a great morning routine that I do most mornings.  It makes me feel on top of my life, even if I'm not, when I start the day with my morning routine.  

create good habits in the new year - drink water

No matter how many times I put this on my list, I seem to forget.  I'll be in the middle of the day wondering why I have a headache and realize I haven't drank anything all day.  It's because it's an easy thing to forget.  I also drink more water when I drink it in my favorite metal #getcrafty cup.

eat protein at breakfast or whenever you break your fast

We've all heard the saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  And it is.  But maybe it's not because of the time that it's eaten, but WHAT is eaten.  If you start the day with carbs, it's not going to give you the energy you need for your day.  High protein breakfasts have been shown to reduce calorie intake late in the day and improve the levels of your appetite regulating hormones.    


Exercise is so great, not just for physical health, but mental health as well.  I wish I could say that exercise is something I'm good at, but not so much, even though I have several tips to sneak it in.  Apparently I need to go back and reread that post!  

20 good habits in 2020 - get ready every day


It's is so good for your mental health to get ready every day.  When you look better, you feel better and can do better!  Jump in the shower, throw some mascara on and brush your hair.  Even if all you put on is jeans, a T, and a cardi.  You will feel so much better!  Check out my Pinterest board if you're looking for some easy outfits.   

make time for meals

Do you eat breakfast in the morning?  We've already discussed how important it is.  (see above)  How often do you find yourself working through lunch or skipping it all together because you're too busy?  How much better do you think you would feel if you made time to take a break and sat down to eat? When I take the time to sit down or at least grab something healthy quickly, I am less hangry and more able to be a good mom and a good person.

This is one habit that I am definitely looking forward to getting into.  I really like Jordan's system and am looking forward to implementing some of it.

20 good habits in 2020 - meal plan

meal plan

I have been meal planning for about a year now.  It has much SUCH a difference that I wish I had done it years ago.
how I meal plan

  • keep a list of our family's favorites meals in the notepad on my phone
  • once a week, usually on Sunday's, I go through the list and plan our meals for the week.
  • then I inventory what groceries I need and order them 
  • every day at dinner time, I know what we are having to eat- no more what's for dinner stress!

take a pause  

All through out the day, I could be frustrated, and I'm sure you could do.  Things go wrong- traffic is bad, kids misbehave, messes are made, and bad hair days happen.  If we spend our time frustrated, we will keep finding more things to be frustrated about.  It's the Law of Attraction.  So with "bad" things happening, how do we keep our minds right?  Take a pause.  Sadie Jane says to place your hands on your chest and belly and take a deep breath.  It works.  Try it!

be very intentional with time 

Our time is precious! If you are not careful you can waste minutes, hours and even days.   How much time do you spend mindlessly scrolling through social media?  How much tv do you watch at night?  These mindless activities will not get you any closer to your goals.  If you need help to stay on track, set the timer on your phone to make sure you don't waste your precious time!

20 good habits in 2020 - walmart grocery pick up

order groceries online and do pick up

Grocery Pick up is LIFE CHANGING!  Along with meal planning (above) ordering my groceries online and having them bring them right to my car is the BEST!  I have only had 1 thing that didn't work and when I called to tell customer service, they credited my debit card and gave me a $10 off code for next time.  I've always been super happy with my produce and meat as well.  Another benefit is that if they run out of something you have ordered, they will substitute a larger package or another brand for the same price as what you ordered.  I cannot say enough good things about grocery pick up!

recite affirmations 

Every time I wash my hands through out the day, which is a lot, I look at myself in the mirror and recite affirmations.  If needed, you can write them on your mirror with a dry erase marker.

  • I am enough.  I do enough.
  • I have all the energy I need to do my best.
  • It's my job to like me.
  • I am never too much and always enough.
  • I am fearless.
  • I inspire others.
  • I can do this!

20 good habits in 2020 - wash your hands

wash your hands often

Speaking of washing your hands, do so often.  I actually did a paper on this in college and found out that hand washing is the #1 way to prevent the spread of infection.  Imagine where your hands have been through out the day and the things you have come in contact with.  Eeeewww!  Wash your hands!

put hand cream on

Of course if you wash your hands a lot, your hands will become dry.  Dry hands are a common condition, often due to cold, dry weather or frequent hand washing.  The skin on the hands cannot maintain moisture and could result in dry, rough hands.  The easiest way to remedy this is to apply hand cream.  If you don't like your hands feeling greasy during the day, apply hand cream to only the back of your hands.  Then load them up with hand cream at night while you're sleeping.

20 good habits in 2020 - spend time with family and friends

spend quality time with friends and family

I love social media!  I really do.   But no online relationship can take the place of in person friends and family.  Make an effort to put down your phone and step away from your computer to work on the relationships in your life.  Go on date nights with your spouse.  Spend quality time playing with your kids.  Have a Girls Night out.  Do something away from your phone to deepen your relationships in real life.

say nice things to yourself

Have you ever analyzed the way you speak to yourself- you know, the running commentary that is always going through your mind?  You will probably realize that it's not very nice.  You wouldn't allow another person to speak to you that way, so why do you allow yourself to do so?  You're not perfect - you make mistakes, say stupid things etc.  But rather than bully yourself, treat yourself with grace.

have a gratitude practice

A daily practice of gratitude, helps you to see the things you have instead of everything you don't.  It attracts abundance to you.  According to Psychology Today, "We live in a materialistic culture that encourages constant wanting and sees possessions as the source of happiness."  But over time, practicing gratitude curbs negativity and shifts thoughts to produce a climate of positivity that reaches inward and extends outward.  It doesn't have to be too difficult or a big process- just simply reciting what you're grateful for and writing it in your journal.

keep a win list

Do you ever get to the end of the day and cannot think of a single thing you did but know you were busy?  That can be quite discouraging.  But if you simple write down several things you did that are wins, it will remind you of what you did do, (BTW if all you do is survive some days, that's totally ok) can help you feel happy and proud of yourself.  And we all totally need more of that in our lives!

The success of your day starts the night before with your night routine.  In your night routine, you can accomplish several of the good habits that are in this list.  Then get some rest to recover from your day!
