It seems like my house is full of awkward walls and weird spaces. For this space I made a built in when my search for well fitting furniture was futile. On the other wall in my dining room, I used a shelving unit, while searching for a cart or other vintage piece that fit perfectly. Well I'm not sure if you realize this or not, but perfectly fitting furniture is pretty hard to find!
In the process of redoing my kitchen, I took down one of the wall cabinets. BTW- you should have seen me take that heavy thing (on the upper left in the photo) off the wall. It was quite the sight! :)
I placed the cabinet against the wall in my dining room to get it out of the way while I worked on the kitchen. When to my surprise, it fit perfectly right there. Like perfect length to fit along the wall and perfect width to not being the way of getting around the dining room table. It was meant to be! So I decided to makeover an upper kitchen cabinet into a sideboard for my dining room.
How to make a Sideboard from a Kitchen Cabinet
Supplies Needed to turn a kitchen cabinet into a sideboard
- 2 x 4
- 1 x 4
- 1x12 or 1x15 top
- stain
- black chalk paint
- sealer
- cabinet knobs (similar)
I took the molding off the top of the our old cabinet and turned it upside down so the door handles could be at the top of the cabinet. Then I built a base for the cabinet from 2 x 4's. I cut 2 long pieces to the width of the cabinet. Then I cut to smaller pieces to fit in between. I screwed them together to form a rectangle, then screwed the cabinet into the 2 x 4's from inside.
I used 1 x 4 to cover up the base 2x4's. I mitered the corners so they would line up well, then glued and nailed them into the cabinet.
I gave the cabinet a light sanding, wiped the dust off, and then painted it all with 2 coats of chalk paint. This paint worked well because it requires no prep. After the paint was dried, I sealed it with 2 coats of top coat.
For the top, I used a stained 1x12 that I already had in my garage from a previous project. If I were to buy a new piece of wood, I would probably use a 1x15 to make it have a bit more depth.
Then it was time for what I'd been looking forward to - the Styling! Above the sideboard, I placed my Open Shelves made from reclaimed wood that had previously been in our kitchen. They fit perfectly right here and make such a fun place to style!
Since we have open shelving in our kitchen, this sideboard works perfectly to hide some of our less than pretty dishes and mugs. In fact, it has tons of storage for unsightly and other seasonal items! Yay!
From this view you can see the new open shelves in our kitchen. Taking the cabinet down in our kitchen opened it up so much. It's so bright in here. I'm sooo happy I finally bit the bullet and tackled this project! I'll be doing a blog post about it soon.
Having this sideboard table and open shelving in this spot work so well. It gives me tons of storage and tons of decorating space, which are equally important to me!
It wasn't hard at all to make this cabinet into a functional storage piece. I'm so happy with the decision to make this Sideboard from a Kitchen Cabinet.
